A CAC card is the standard identification used for active duty uniformed Service personnel, DoD civilian employees, Selected Reserve, and eligibile contractor personnel. Also known as a "smart card," the CAC card enables access to DoD systems and computer networks and is also used as a badge to prove identity.
A PIV card is a US Federal government-wide credential used to access restricted or controlled facilities and information. Just like a CAC, the PIV is also a "smart card" that can be used for identity verification or logging into a system.
